Darkness on the Delta

I find myself at Delta State University for the DSU Honor Band. I had a tuba player make the band this year, only the 2nd student I've had in my time at Smithville. I've enjoyed hanging out with my old friend Sam Cunningham as well as renewing some new aquaintances at DSU. I'm missing my family, though, an will be happy to get home to them tomorrow. Peace!

One time at band camp...

I'm midway through day 2 of ICC band camp, and it's going great. Yesterday was way long, but I can feel myself getting into a groove already. I think I've settled on my concert pieces; this afternoon's rehearsal will tell for sure. Literature selection is tough, especially given the current state of my music library. All in all, I feel good about what I'm doing this week, and am thankful for the opportunity.

In and Out

I got in from family vacation late Thursday, and today I'm out to ICC Band Camp in Fulton. This year at camp, I'm conducting a band for the first time. Until now I've always taught percussion classes, so I'm excited to have a new challenge this summer. I'll be working with the Gold Band along with Len Killough from Oxford. Len and I are old friends, and it should be a lot of fun working together. I'm certainly excited and looking forward to the concert on Friday. More than that, I'm looking to enjoy getting to know some student musicians from some other schools.

Waiting

I'm outside the Lyric in Tupelo, passing the time before tonight's performance of "Alice in Wonderland." I've experienced a rush of good ideas lately, and have started laying the groundwork for some of them. I'm also making decisions about the fall now that my job situation seems to have stabilized. There certainly is a lot to do, so I'm trying to line up as much as I can before going on vacation Sunday.

One idea I really want to get to work on is a video-based drumset method targeted at beginners. I'm working out the vision for it now, and writing some ideas down. I think there's a need for a beginner method that approaches the instrument from a musical rather than a technical viewpoint. I'm gonna give it a whirl!

A New Beginning

I've been thinking a lot lately about what The JC Studio is and what I'd like it to be. In looking back through my blog history, I'm reminded that I had hoped for this activity to spur some greater creative output. While I've certainly gotten some things done in the 4 years since its beginnings, I've not achieved the kind of productivity and progress I had in mind. I think it's high time The JC Studio achieved liftoff!

I'm happy to have been playing some lately. I played "The Drowsy Chaperone" with Tupelo Community Theater in May, and this week I'm playing TCT Juniors "Alice in Wonderland." I also had a great time playing with Tate Moore and the Cosmic Door at Proud Larry's last week.

Still at Smithville School, where we just won our second consecutive State Marching Championship in class 1A! Still playing at FBC Amory on most Sunday nights. I'm currently considering graduate work, most likely in Education Leadership.

A Beautiful Day in Mississippi

After a week of intense cold, complete with snow and ice, we have beautiful sunshine today! It has been a really great week at school, and now we get a 3 day weekend. Christy and I will be in Greenville tomorrow to play with Danny Blurton's SwingMachine. It's always a great band and a good time. Too bad it's over 3 hours away! Sunday will see me playing in morning and evening services at FBC Amory, and then it'll be time to relax some on Monday. Hopefully I'll get in a fair amount of practice and score study over the weekend.
I'm looking forward to beginning percussion studies with Dr. Larry Bradford, hopefully as early as next week. He's going to help me get back on track with my percussion practice. We'll be focused mostly on marimba. I've also begun contacting a few folks about a percussion ensemble for educators and enthusiasts in my area. I hope to get something rolling with that very soon. It's a very exciting time in my musical life right now, and I'm optimistic about the days to come.

Snowbound

We've spent the last two days out of school due to snow and ice accumulation. It's been nice to be home for a couple of days to catch up on some things that I procrastinated on during the holidays. I could easily get spoiled to being at home! I've been working on some new musical ideas that I hope to roll out soon. By the way, any percussionists out there should check out a couple of things if they haven't already. One is the new PAS website. There are a lot of new features that will be really cool once everyone figures out how to utilize them. Another is www.thomasburritt.com, home of Percussion Axiom tv. He has lots of videos up covering a lot of interesting percussion topics. Check It Out!

Let it Snow!

Everybody in Monroe County is watching and waiting to see if the snow is going to fall overnight. I'm cool either way, but there will certainly be a lot of disappointed boys and girls if they have to go to school. There are already a lot of cancellations around us, so I expect we'll be home tomorrow. I brought home a couple of scores to study, and there's no shortage of work to do here at home. It sure would be nice to watch the snow fall from the comfort of my warm house, in my jammies, with a hot cup of coffee while I cook a big breakfast for my family. So, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! (just please no power outage!!)

Staff Development is Great!

Today was half day in the office, half day in staff development. I don't know that I made much immediate progress in either way, but hopefully, in the long run, my efforts will be rewarded. Students show up tomorrow, with the obligatory schedule changes, what did you get for Christmas, I forgot my horn excuses, and other various and sundry madness. We'll probably get it all straightened out just in time for a snow day on Thursday to throw another wrench in the works. If happiness is having appropriate expectations, I'm setting mine just right this week. Focus on the fundamentals, establish some routines, try to recognize the value in what we're doing, and get down to work. If this is starting to sound like a self-directed pep talk, that's because it is. Ready or not, here it comes!

Well, I'm 39 today! Getting older has its ups and downs, but it sure bears the alternative. Tomorrow is a staff day, hopefully I'll spen it I'm the band hall working. Students return on Tuesday and it's down to work again. I know these next days are no different than any others, but it's hard to escape the excitement of a new year. It has been too long since my last post. Much has changed and much has stayed the same. This post finds me enjoying the first days of Christmas holidays, just back from Midwest Clinic in Chicago. It has been an eventful summer and fall semester. The big news professionally is that the Smithville Seminole Marching Band is State Champion in Class 1A! The band won every caption at championships after attaining a Superior Rating at the Region 1 Festival in Tupelo. It has been a great year so far!

I'm headed in for the last official day of the school year. The schedule says breakfast, meeting, meeting, gone by noon. If I can get my office put back together in that span of time, I'll be surprised.

It's a beautiful Friday evening, the kids are watching Scooby Doo, and I find myself with both the time and desire to update my blog. The new year is off to a good start, I've cultivated a few good habits, kicked a few bad ones, and am generally enjoying what life has brought me at this point. Work is good, teaching is fun, and I'm excited about what may be around the corner. The family is doing well, the kids are growing, Christy and I have a most beautiful relationship, and we're all in good health. Certainly there are always challenges, but all in all, things are good. I hope the same for anyone out there reading this.

Last night's instrumental program at church was a blazing success. The orchestra sounded great, the banner's were beautiful, and everyone seemed well pleased with the results. Thanks to everyone involved for a successful evening. Of course, that leaves everything done but moving the mountain of percussion equipment back to it's resting place. The weather is clear, but with temperatures hovering around 24 degrees, loading will be a little uncomfortable. Luckily, I've got some good company for the trip and am looking forward to a beautiful day.

Christmas time is finally here. School wrapped up on Friday, and I'm looking forward to 2 weeks of friends and family. We've been busy around the JC studio working on our instrumental Christmas celebration at church. It's set for tomorrow night. We'll be featuring a small orchestra, several keyboard pieces, and the 3rd performance of my trio arrangement of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." This year's production features narration, banners, and a light show! I'm looking forward to a wonderful time of celebration of the Christmas season.

Clinic last week was a great time. I was able to attend several fine clinics, most notable of which were a visual clinic with Tim Pierce and Nola Jones, and a great presentation by Elva Kaye Lance. I also got the opportunity to hang out with Mark Wessells for quite a while. It seems that in addition to be an eminent percussion pedagogue and purveyor of digital drumming media, he's also a cool guy. Clinic Time

I'll be headed to Tupelo for the next 3 days for the Mississippi Bandmaster's Association Clinic. I'm looking forward to seeing some old friends and making some new ones. The clinic offerings look to be the best in recent memory, so I'll be learning a lot two. I've got a couple of students attending the clinic, and I'm looking forward to seeing at least one former student. Clinic is always a lot of fun, and I'm psyched to be going. After that, I'll have a week of exams before Christmas holidays.

You'd think with a week off, I would have posted by now, but it's been a relatively busy time of travel and visiting. I should be well rested by the time school picks up on Monday, and I'll need to be with the week ahead! There's the Amory Christmas parade on Monday, the ICC Music Department Christmas Gala on Wednesday, and the SHS Winter Concert on Thursday. Thankfully, things will begin to wind down for the semester at that point, and I'll be looking for a white Christmas!

The Smithville Seminoles lost their playoff game last night against Ray Brooks in beautiful and scenic Benoit, MS. The boys had a good year, and played with a lot of heart and class last night. The players, coaches, and staff are to be congratulated on a job well done. The band will officially shift into concert mode on Monday, although we've already been at it a couple of weeks. We have a concert on Dec. 4, and then it'll be Christmas before we know it.

I'm just in from the last regular season game of the year, in which the Smithville Seminoles clinched 4th place in Division 1-1A and a playoff game at Ray Brooks next Friday. We'll be doing the pep band thing, as it is high time to convert to a concert mode. We have our Christmas concert coming up on Dec. 4, which gives us 3 weeks (almost) of prep time, not including Thanksgiving holidays. On another note, my good friend George McConnell has his new website up and running and is playing at Proud Larry's in Oxford as I write this. Check him out for sure, it's good stuff!

Championship thoughts

Got in about 11:30 last night from state marching championships. Alas, we didn't make finals but the kids had, I think, their best performance of the year during prelims, and that's what it's all about. Some teary eyes and sad faces, but they realize we accomplished our goal of reaching a higher level this year. I'm privileged to teach a great group of kids who are learning to be winners no matter what the final results are.

I'm a bit hoarse (sp?) from the first chilly Friday Night Lights at West Oktibbeha last night. The band had it's first excellent run of the year, and not a minute too soon. We have state championships next week, and everything needs to be hitting hard by then. We're also doing band night on Friday night with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade band. On top of that, Calhoun City will be bringing their state championship band to town that night as well. What a release next Sunday will be. Peace

I finished up two weeks of band camp yesterday. I can only describe camp as the most successful yet in my time at Smithville. The kids worked really hard and accomplished all the goals set for them. We were able to march and play the opener on Thursday, with time to polish a bit and start on the second tune on Friday. We've never gotten that far in camp before, so I'm very excited about our progress. School starts next week, so we'll see how much they remember next time I see them.

Summer is officially over, and I'm back to blogging once again. After much travel, rest, work, more rest, and a lot of "chillaxin'" (thanks T-baby!) I have finally gotten back into a sort of routine. A great week at ICC Summer Band Camp got things rolling, and today I had the first day of Guard and Percussion Camp at SHS. The entire drumline is returning from last year, and looks ready to build on last year's success. Our color guard will be young, but got off to a solid start today with lots of fundamentals. Next week begins full band camp, and then it's back to school! Stay tuned for more as things around the JC Studio get cranked up to full volume.

This entry finds me enjoying a quiet Tuesday morning at home. School is out and I'm looking forward to a couple of weeks of down time. I'm planning some camping, reading, and boating before getting back in the swing of things with Danny Blurton on June 21. I'm also looking to reschedule a date with Alphonso Sanders, as well as get in some studio time with George McConnell. On the whole, though, I'm looking forward to a restful June.

It's been pretty busy around the studio lately. We had our high school band banquet last week at the Pickle Barrel. We ate some chicken and pork loin, gave out some minor awards, and took a lot of pictures. It was a nice end to the year for that group. We also had our final junior high concert of the year, which went way better than it had any right to. Now it's just one more week til summer vacation. I've got a bass gig with the kiddie choir at church tomorrow that I'm looking forward to. Once school is out, I'll be getting started on the music for next year's half-time show. I'll be composing it on my new iMac with Sibelius 5 and Virtual Drumline. Should be a lot of fun.

I got an email today with some rough mixes of the tunes I worked on with George a few weeks ago. I don't know that we got any keepers, but I think we're real close to where we want to be with a couple of them. I'm eager to get back in the studio soon, and see what other damage we can do. This weekend, I travel to Memphis to judge the solo and ensemble portion of the Playing For A Cure Music Festival. The proceeds go to fund lung cancer research. Good music for a good cause; what could be better!

Countdown to St. Louis

I just got in from playing two church services, West Jackson in Tupelo and Hillcrest in New Albany. Both services went really well, but the highlight of the evening was watching Adam Davenport eat. That boy can really pack it away! This will be a short week at school because I leave Thursday with the SHS band for our trip to St. Louis. We'll see the Arch, the Zoo, the Cathedral Basilica, Union Station, the Symphony, and of course Six Flags. Aside from the bus ride, it ought to be a lot of fun. Tomorrow, we have guard and drum major tryouts for the fall. The junior high bands are preparing for their final concerts in May, and we still have a band banquet to get done. What a busy time of year! We'll push right up to the end of school, and then relax. I can't wait!

This weekend's recording session was very productive. George, Tommy, and I were able to get 4 tunes down. I expect we'll live with these demo's for awhile, and then recut the tunes after they've had some time to germinate. It was a lot of fun hanging out with these guys at Winn's studio in Water Valley. Good friends and good tunes are always a good time.

It's been a busy two weeks since spring break. My junior high bands are preparing for the spring concert, and I've been working to finalize details for the St. Louis trip. I've also redoubled my teaching efforts in general music, all of which has resulted in a very satisfying experience at work. I'm looking forward to this weekend and spending some time in the studio with George. It looks to be a lot of fun, and I'm grateful and honored to be included his new project. I just finished a restful spring break, and am looking forward to finishing out the school year with a bang. I headed over to Oxford with my wife last night for the show at Larry's. What a blast! Everyone was very complimentary and seemed to be having a great time. I had a chance to catch up with several folks I haven't seen in a while. I expect for jobs with this band to become a more regular occurrence. We should also be spending some time in the studio soon to record some of George's new material. Now I'm settled in for what's left a three day weekend. Thanks President's Day!

I had one student from Smithville to make the band, and another had a good showing his first time out. The clinic is next weekend. Just got back from Cleveland and the DSU Honor Band. I had a lot of fun reminiscing with some old friends and exploring some of my old haunts. Of course, you can never go back (who'd want to?) but it was a nice trip down memory lane. A La Carte Alley was of course a high point!
Anyway, Monday afternoon will find me at Tupelo High School judging auditions for the NEMBDA Honor Band. I'm looking forward to hearing as many flam paradiddles as humanly possible!

Delta Swing

I had a great time playing in Greenville, MS Saturday night. It was a good band, with good charts, and a lot of fun. School is back in full swing, with clinic season coming up soon. The praise team at FBC Amory is also back up and running, and I've been subbing for the youth group until they can find a permanent replacement for their former drummer. I hope anyone reading this is off to a good start on their new year, and look for me to keep updating this space. There's more to come!

Back to School

I spent about 8 hours yesterday listening to 92 percussionists audition for the Mississippi Lion's All-State Band. Talk about sonic overload! I haven't seen the overall results, but it's obvious there's some great percussion teaching going on in our state. Tomorrow it's back to school from Christmas break. I'm looking forward to seeing my old students and meeting a few new ones. This weekend, I have a job with Danny Blurton's Swingmachine in Greenville, which is always a lot of fun. It'll be a reunion with one of my favorite, if infrequent, partners in crime, bassist Raphael Semmes. Well, best of luck to everyone on the start of a New Year!

It's been great having some time off to unwind and visit with family these last few days. By the weekend, it will be back to business as usual, albeit with renewed vision and energy. This Saturday, I'll be judging first round tryouts for the Mississippi Lion's All-State Band at Pearl High School. Then it's back to school for the start of the spring semester. Throw in a 37th birthday, and it promises to be a big week at the JC Studio.

We made it home from Chicago today, and what a trip it was! I learned alot, saw some old friends, made some new acquaintances, heard awesome concerts, and ate lots of great food. I'm headed for Chicago and the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic tomorrow morning. I'll be there through Sunday attending classes and concerts, checking out the display hall, and hanging out with rock star music educators from around the world. I can hardly wait! The SHS Band performed a concert for the elementary school today, and it was a rousing success. The band played a few contest worthy tunes, some popular stuff, and, of course, a few Christmas songs. Tomorrow, the FBC Orchestra is doing a caroling tour of area nursing homes, and on Sunday I'll be performing with my wife and a friend at church on my arrangement of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." Tis the season for lots of gigging!

Settling Down

Things are being to slow down a bit for the holidays. The gigs at FUMC and West Jackson in Tupelo went great. I was almost the victim of glockenspiel exposure, but survived to tell the tale. I'm looking forward to a Friday performance of the Smithville Band for our elementary, caroling some area nursing homes on Saturday, and a trio performance at FBC Amory on Sunday. Then it's party day at SHS and on to Chicago for the Midwest Clinic on Tuesday. After flying in on the 23rd, I'll be performing on tuba and congas (what a combo!) for our church's instrumental night. Then time for Christmas holidays! I'll be ready for some couch time for sure!

The Smithville Seminole Band participated in the Amory Christmas Parade on December 3. The band did a great job, received positive comments from several folks in attendance, and had a lot of fun to boot. This was the last public perfomance by a very special group. We've had a great time working and growing together this year.

I'll be heading over to Tupelo tomorrow for the MBA Convention. Smithville Bands will be well represented by two students. I'll be serving as percussion chairman for one of the bands. Also, this weekend I'll be playing timpani and percussion for a couple of church programs, First United Methodist and West Jackson Baptist, both in Tupelo. Looks like a busy weekend for me!

Football season is over and, with the exception of two parades, so is marching band. We've had a great season this year, with a lot of growth musically and personally for most everyone involved. Now it's time to get winter drumline going, and I'm already at work on next year's halftime. No rest for the weary!

On the road again?

It looks like I may be doing some shows and recording with my old friend George McConnell. So far it's all in the planning stages, but we should be making some noise soon. Stay tuned for details.

Seminole Bands at Championship!

The Smithville Seminole Marching Band participated in the MHSAA State Marching Championship in class 1A last Saturday, October 27 at Clinton High School. We placed second overall, with 1st place finishes in visual effect, color guard, and percussion. More importantly, we likely bankrupted the Barnhills Buffet on County Line Road in Jackson. Awesome job guys!!!

A first step!

Well, I'm taking the first steps of creating an internet presence of sorts. Hopefully, this will be a place for others to keep up with an ever increasing level of creative productivity. We'll see. For now, I've got to set up the template and see how much I can wring out of this format. More later!
